Philadelphia Doll Museum: A Unique Perspective on History
During
African-American History Month there are generally numerous activities
to attend that explore different aspects of African-American history
and culture. However, it is sometimes difficult to find activities
that a young child will be able to appreciate. The Philadelphia
Doll Museum is a place where people of all ages, male and female,
will be entertained and at the same time get a lesson in African-American
history. Moreover, the Philadelphia Doll Museum is open all year
around-not just in February!
San Diego Artist Creates Unique Dolls
I
recently visited doll designer, Petrina Burnham's home in San
Diego, California, where she maintains a large collection of Afrocentric
dolls. Her collection is a little different from many collections
in that Petrina is partial to soft-sculptured dolls made out of
fabric only. Her collection is made of dolls designed by many
African-American doll artists, as well as doll artists from all
over the world including "Kelly" from Jamaica, "Zukiswa" from
South Africa and many others from Ghana, Mexico and the Bahamas.
